At first, my local grocery store offered this, but would not allow people to purchase just one of something at 50% off. I understand that the greater volume of enables the chain to negotiate costs down by buying in greater bulk, but they finally gave in and offer that 50% off to people who push for it.
I usually don't ask for it, but I did try it once and noticed that it rang up at 50% off without my asking.
What bothers me is that at the end of every purchase, the clerks are require to say, "You saved ___ dollars today," which is fuel for fire that most are too polite to start.

I so agree! I feel bad for people who live in urban and impoverished areas that never get to enjoy either. There might be a little cost to that, Art. Aren't we so fortunate!
