The more I read about it I am leaning toward the fact that you were sold a pup in Brexit by an inept government. I have long said that the British have had appalling leadership since the war and these sort of articles seem to bear that out.My experience is limited but when I think of the calibre of people like Macmillan, Eden, Douglas Hume, Edward Heath then I am not surprised at the state the country is in. A nation of lions led by donkeys.
I am not saying Australian leaders were that much better but we had some outstanding ones like Hawke and Keating (even to a lesser extent Howard) and you only need one occasionally to keep you out of the shit. Britain has not had that - even the very best was merely mediocre.

Strong leadership is not necessarily good leadership, dictators are strong leaders. Thatcher destroyed the social fabric of the UK in my opinion; compare what was happening at the same time with the Hawke/Keating government and the Accord.
The Accord changed the industrial landscape in Australia for ever, it was not perfect by any means but the end result was that we have not had a recession since the early 1990's. Thatcher on the other hand waged war on the Unions yet the industrial relations situation seems little different now so she actually achieved nothing lasting other than social disruption and a nation at war with itself.
