Re: Any Opera Lovers Out There.

I've seen lots of musicals but never an opera, as I can't speak Italian so I wouldn't understand it anyway.

I love it - and Ballet - take every opportunity to go when I can. Mind you, there are some good films out there. I love this version of 'Carmen' with Julia Migenes-Johnson - she actually looks like a sensuous gypsy girl !!

This'll help Alan.

Vesti La Giubba Lyrics
(Pagliacci)(On with the show)

ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Go on stage, while I'm nearly delirious?
I don't know what I'm saying or what I'm doing!
And yet, chin up! I'll try harder. Bah, you think you're a man?
You're just a clown! On with the show, man,
And put on your white-face.
The people pay you and you must make them laugh.
And if Harlequin should steal your Columbine, laugh,
You're Pagliaccio, and the world will clap for you!
Turn into banter all your pain and sorrow,
And with your clowns' face hide grief and distress...
Laugh loud, Pagliaccio, forget all of your troubles,
Laugh off the pain that so empoisons your heart.

Re: Any Opera Lovers Out There.

QUEEN LYRICS
"Bohemian Rhapsody"

Is this the real life?
Is this just fantasy?
Caught in a landslide,
No escape from reality.

Open your eyes,
Look up to the skies and see,
I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy,
Because I'm easy come, easy go,
Little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to me.

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead.
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I've gone and thrown it all away.

Mama, ooh,
Didn't mean to make you cry,
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow,
Carry on, carry on as if nothing really matters.

Too late, my time has come,
Sent shivers down my spine,
Body's aching all the time.
Goodbye, everybody, I've got to go,
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth.

Mama, ooh (anyway the wind blows),
I don't wanna die,
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all.

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango?
Thunderbolt and lightning,
Very, very frightening me.
(Galileo) Galileo.
(Galileo) Galileo,
Galileo Figaro
Magnifico.

I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves me.
He's just a poor boy from a poor family,
Spare him his life from this monstrosity.

Easy come, easy go, will you let me go?
Bismillah! No, we will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let him go!)
Bismillah! We will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Will not let you go. (Let me go!)
Never, never let you go
Never let me go, oh.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Oh, mama mia, mama mia (Mama mia, let me go.)
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me.

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye?
So you think you can love me and leave me to die?
Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby,
Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here.

(Oh, yeah, oh yeah)

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters,
Nothing really matters to me.

Anyway the wind blows.

But is it Opera. ?

Re: Any Opera Lovers Out There.

So where does opera end and musical begin? As far as I can tell an opera is mostly full of misery, sung in Italian and is depressing, whereby a musical is mostly joyful, sung in a language I can understand and lifts the spirit, so for me there is no contest really..

Re: Any Opera Lovers Out There.

In Tenerife this year we went to see our first Opera show it was fabulous regardless we didn't understand a word of Italian but followed the story with no trouble. I choose to go because it had flamenco dancing in it.....boy was I pleased.

Yep, tip top version of Carmen I recorded the whole thing when it was on TV ages ago.

Personally can't abide ballet, all that leaping about spoils the music. (But that's just me)

Re: Any Opera Lovers Out There.

I have never much liked Italian opera, other than some 'greatest hits' arias, but I love Wagner and baroque opera. I've never attended a live performance due to back problems, so am absolutely thrilled by the quality of dvd versions of my favourites, which bring the performances so much more alive than recordings, good as they may be..
