Developing artifical intelligence

Shortly after watching a sci-fi program, and playing chess against a computer, I began to wonder how far have we gone toward developing artificial intelligence, AI.

For example, have we yet developed a computer that understands human speech ?

If so, can that computer be given simple orders?

like, this. "Computer, set bedroom temp to 20 C." OR

"Computer, reduce room lighting by 50%"

Re: Developing artifical intelligence

My mother managed that when I was born, so nothing new there.

Really ? Your mother developed a computer that understands human speech and then obeys commands?

I had a Ford Mondeo in 2012 which had full voice control over the heating / cooling / stereo & phone.

Re: Developing artifical intelligence

We already have robots that are capable of 'thinking' and 'learning'. That combined with the rapid decline of the UK means we are heading for a sci-fy- like Dystopia.

Re: Developing artifical intelligence

I recently saw a Japanese video about human-like robots that were capable of having conversations, though somewhat limited.

When they were not actually moving, it was impossible to tell they were not actually humans.

Fascinating but worrying at the same time.
