Re: War of the Worlds!

Adaptations of great books seldom make great films nor great tv-there are exceptions of course.

My nightmare would be a repeat of `The Tripods` but catching a cold.

Re: War of the Worlds!

I have the great Jeff Wayne double album
I have a recording of the original 1953 War Of The Worlds film with Gene Barry,
I' have a recording of the updated film with Tom Cruise

Yet all of these pale in comparison to the story as told in the actual book by H. G. Wells.

Neither the album nor either of the films come anywhere even close to the sheer desperation and depression of the main character portrayed in the novel. It's a good read and a good story.

If you like the film and story then I recommend reading the actual book. You can download it for free on the Kindle, or download it for your PC and use the PC Kindle reader or use other formats like RTF, Mobi, Txt etc.

Whilst you are at it you can download for free lots of other classic Sci-Fi stories. All great reads.

Re: War of the Worlds!

The thing about a book as that we all have our mind`s eye on it-thus adaptations can be a let down. One exception for me would be a film called `Stand by Me`-From a short story by Stephen King

Sorry Guys, I like Tom Cruise, 'A Few Good Men' was a particular favorite, and his 'Mission Impossible' films...Excellent! His portrayal of 'Jack Reacher' wasn't too bad either....

Me too. The MI series and Jack Reacher film(s) are fairly good as was his part in the Last Samurai. Knight and Day was a bit of enjoyable hokum too.

That's because he did his research especially on the locations featured in the book. The novel is set around Woking where Wells lived at the time so naturally the locations are the genuine ones, not ones made up for the novel. The observatory where the Martian's trip from mars was first spotted and Horsefell Common all exist in real life, this is what makes the novel more believable.

The thought of those eyes on stalks things coming through my bedroom window still troubles me even today.

Something to look forward to, provided of course that the don't include any left wing political bias and they make the dialogue audible!

I enjoyed The Tripods. It's just a shame that they decided not to finish it with the events in the third book.
