Re: Things that annoy you!

People who do and say unkind or mean things just to control others. This kind of need is a massive sign of insecurity and small mindedness.

It is a double edged sword. At work, people leaned on me for these things rather than look them up.
Me too and my school register.

well apart from the technical bit

I still do some technical consultancy so remembering stuff like that can be quite handy but not essential. A simple example is Pi (Π) which is used frequently in electrical calculations.
But I use a spread sheet for those, mainly so that I don't have to do them long hand every time. Type "=PI()*f*L" and you don't have to remember the actual value of Pi to six decimal places. But I can't help it.

Yes, approximately...........

The formula I gave was just an example of how Pi is used to calculate the effect a particular component will have on our electrical supply, a choke in this case. L is its value, f our frequency (50Hz for us), and Pi is.......well, Pi is Pi.....
Fun stuff.......init?

I do have a grouse though.
I'm an electrical engineer. The mathematics and physics required is quite advanced.

When I tell people what I did for a living, they think I fixed vending machines or something like that.

The issue I have is the loose way in which the term "engineer" is used in this country. The guy who comes to fix your loo is not a sanitary engineer. And the chap who repairs your photocopier is not and engineer. Technician possibly.

It demeans the profession that being an engineer is.
This was my bag:

Re: Things that annoy you!

Agreed,Bes.
Short version-during my doctorate,it was required we show the working of Pi to 'at least' [their wording] 100,000 places. It's infinite,mate-it would have been possible to continue WAY past the 'point one million' mark. But yer akshal coffee-machine re-filler knows better. Fairy Nuff.
