The Vecra's in the dealers

It kept cutting out on Monday, I knew it was a fuel problem so took it into the Vauxhall garage.

They phoned me today to tell me it's gonna cost £700 for a new fuel pump.

That price includes the diagnostic charge they take for telling you what's wrong, £128 for connecting a scart lead into the socket on the car, now that's a rip-off innit.

My dealers used to charge for the diagnostic check but if you left the car with them to do the repair the charge was waived, now it's £100 and it's added to the final cost.

What gets me is the labour costs, the repair could cost 50p but add the labour and it costs you ££££'s....

Mine has been doing the same, OH cleaned the air intake and checked the spark plugs and it was OK. Our local garage would run a diagnostic for £25.00 BTW. I hope I don't need a new fuel pump!

I hate cars!!!!

What 'gets' me about labour charges [the 'norm' around here is £50-70 per hour] -is that it could be an apprentice mechanic who did the work [he would be getting £5 an hour!]

Re: The Vecra's in the dealers

Usually in franchised garages they have a price menu, there's a set price for each job on your car this lets the customer see exactly how much the job's gonna be, my car's supposed to be ready today I'm waiting on a call from them but I'm not holding my breath.

They had the car in 2 years ago, (fortunately it was under warranty), it needed a new ECU which costs £1,100, it took them 13 weeks to fit and re-program the thing, . . eventually they gave up and transported the car to a specialist in Edinburgh, . . I have grave reservations on the abilities of the "mechanics" in that garage.

When I eventually got the car back the service manageress said the problem was the diesel pump, . . I said no it wasn't, . . she said yes it was we have the full report, . . again I said no it wasn't coz it's a PETROL car.

It's her I'm dealing with again lets hope her mechanics know the difference between diesel and petrol eh.

Because of the cost I was gonna ask if she'd waive the diagnostic charge, however I think I won't, I don't fancy grovelling to the likes of her.

Needless to say I will not be back in that dealership again.

Re: The Vecra's in the dealers

Just an update folks, I got it back at 5pm, I'm now £671 poorer off.

These diagnostic charges are a trap, snare, . . or whatever you want to call them, I phoned round various dealers like Ford, Mazda, and Peugeot and they're all the same.

They warn you that the charge is payable whenever you leave your car with them, this is to make sure that you'll tell them to go ahead and do the repair, for example if your car's misfiring (and all it needs is a set of spark plugs) which cost around £10, you still have to pay the £100 diagnostic charge.

To replace the fuel pump on mine would've cost me £410 if I had done the job myself, it's very easy to do coz the pump is right on top of the engine and is held in place by only four bolts.

What I've paid for is the pump at £410 and £250 for them to tell me it was the pump, the charge for labour would only be around £30 because it's so easy to fit the pump.

Rip-off-Britain innit.

Re: The Vecra's in the dealers

Another update ! . . the warning light has come on again , tomorrow I shall insist they give me back the old fuel pump, It's my property so they have no right to keep it, I'll insist they do a further investigation of the fault FOC, if another component has failed I'll insist on a refund for the new pump and I'll refit the old one.

These guys are supposed to go to Vauxhall's training school in Luton, after training they get a diploma but as I've said before, . . paper takes on anything, you wipe your backside with it don't you.
