Re: Treacle and Golden Syrup

I use golden syrup in flapjacks and for a few other recipes but as sparingly as I can get away with without spoiling the product.

I use dark treacle in dark fruit cakes again fairly sparingly.

I wouldn't worry too much about that, it will have a BBE date but it doesn't really go off. I came across this

"
Golden Syrup improves with age according to Heston Blumenthal's "In Search of Perfection". Here he analyses a 70 year old glass jar of Tate and Lyle Gold in the lab finding that the "older treacle contained the same flavour compounds as the normal stuff, but each was intensified".
In his recipe he fakes the ageing process by baking the tin at 70ºC (158ºF) for 24 hours noting that the flavour will continue to improve up to 100 hours."

Re: Treacle and Golden Syrup

Had a look at my tin as I didn't feel like I'd bought any recently and it's two years out of date, no one complained at the flapjacks I made last week so I guess it's OK.

Not since I was a child, our Nana used to use them both in cooking puddings and sometimes in a piece if us kids were hungry between meals.

Re: Treacle and Golden Syrup

I used to enjoy syrup sandwiches in my childhood days which were pre - "it's bad for you" days. I don't think I could face eating them again though.

The only time I use treacle nowadays is to add to the mix when I'm making Christmas cakes.

What I did like, again in my childhood years, was the big dessertspoon full of malt, that was really yummy! I was in hospital with pneumonia when I was three and I clearly remember a nurse giving me this huge spoonful of malt every day after breakfast for three weeks, it was lovely

I was given, as a supplement, not just malt extract but "Virol", packed full of nutrients, including vitamins A, B and D, riboflavin, malt extract, sugar, egg, orange juice and refined fats.
