Indeed ! And BTW in all the books I have read shopping in the local shopping centre may not be as easy as just popping in for a few things, fighting for recourses would start pretty quickly, you would be better off raiding empty houses providing no one else got to them first. And while food would be absolutely necessary medicines would be even more precious.

I tend to avoid books with zombies always seem too far fetched

Have you not seen any Zombie movies - the shopping mall is where the zombies hang out! It's probably the McDonalds that "turns" them.
