Sorted now.
No need for a shower tonight then.

Always a good idea to turn the water off and flush before attempting that.

MKJ. Do you not have isolation valves on your toilets, taps etc?

No idea. There is a valve in the toilet cistern. That is all I know about valves in the water supply - oh, and valves on the radiators.

Re: Leak from an outside pipe?

They are valves on the pipework, normally chrome, with a small screw in the middle. The screw is turned horizontally to the pipe to stop the water flow. They give you control of the water right next to the outlet rather than running up and down the stairs.

Just checked with regard to the toilet. Nothing there but the pipe that feeds it goes through the bathroom and the pipes are covered there so I can't check. There does seem to be valves on other pipes though. Next time I have to mess with the valve in the toilet I will take the pipe covers off and see if I can turn the water off first.

Cheers.

Re: Leak from an outside pipe?

You could turn off the water at the stopcock in future and whilst its off fit an isolator!
