I suppose 'mate' is pretty universal for most men though.

When I meet an acquaintance we usually greet each other by christian names or a shortened version. I find some of the greetings on this thread more irritating than some on Tarantula's thread.

I usually just say Hi or Hello.

If there are dogs involved it's different, dogs are greeted enthusiastically, male dogs with "Hello Mate" and females with "Hello Darlin'"
