Re: Mediterranean Diet

Everything you have said, Sandi, strikes a chord as that's how I remember my Nan, my aunts and uncles and their neighbours. Even our old neighbours where I grew up looked out for one another and we all spoke to each other.

We may have gained labour saving devices but it would seem the advance of society has come at a high price - and one that was so gradual, we didn't even notice its arrival.

That's really quite sad to think about.

Re: Mediterranean Diet

We do eat ready meals or ready-made ingredients but we are very careful about them all and you can find some excellent foods that are not loaded with sugars or salt.

It's the ridiculously cheap ready meals or convenience food that tends to be the worst and, like everything, you get what you pay for.

Waitrose and M&S foods are just not like some of the slop that Tesco serves up but you'll find that ALDI and LIDL also do excellent fare.

We tend to eat our own home-grown produce as much as possible in the Summer months or our spuds, carrots and parsnips in Winter months but otherwise we vary our diet with more Mediterranean-style choices and far more vegetables than perhaps others eat, even down to often having vegetarian food only, as these days the choices are excellent.

My wife's got into doing her own interpretations of dishes and, to be honest, they are excellent and by no means expensive to produce, from a curry to a tagine, the recipes of which is easily sourced on TV or online, as I often look up things for her now plus our slow cooker that produces wonderful, warming meals from relatively meagre (cheap!) ingredients! stevmk2

Re: Mediterranean Diet

Yes Stev I love curries and use a tajine a lot but always make my meals from scratch. We also use produce from the garden or from farmer's markets.

I agree it's much cheaper to make your own, they taste so much better and we have some lovely meals. I try lots of recipes from different countries, the internet has made it so much easier to try new things.
