New thinking on fats

An interesting report from the National Obesity Forum which has overturned previous thinking on the causes of obesity. Four members of the forum have resigned in protest as evidently they were of the low-fat, high-carb method of reducing obesity, something in my opinion that hasn't worked especially considering that this mantra has been recited for the last thirty years.

Re: New thinking on fats

This thinking has been around for some time in certain quarters but of course publicising it doesn't suit big business in the form of the sugar and process food lobby some of whom commission 'research' to justify their products.

A programme on TV a while ago theoretically traced the rise in obesity back to the surge in cheap food facilitated by the use of corn syrup which in turn is tied up with farming/politics in the USA ...

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a highly sweet by-product of waste corn, was also incredibly cheap. It began being used in every conceivable food - pizzas, coleslaw, meat. It provided a "just baked" sheen on bread and cakes.

As always 'new reserch' and fads will come and go.
I will do as I have always done and largely ignore it prefering instead to believe that 'natural not processed' is best and that includes the most natural of fats butter eaten of course like all things in moderation .

Very wise Meg! I have always believed that natural is best and feel that much processed food can be harmful. High carbs are also bad because, unless you are going to use the energy they give immediately, they turn to fat for storage. I think that meals should be average size meat, fish or other protein, plenty of fresh veg and small potion of Carbs, unless you are very active.

Re: New thinking on fats

Pretty sure you have to get oils and fats down you at regular intervals. For instance I just necked a can of tuna in sunflower oil. I ate it with a load of rice cakes and really couldn't get it down my neck fast enough. My body was more or less telling me it needed such stuff.

The right oils and fats are supposedly very good for you but not the ones associated with animal products so they say. Oils and fats are very much an appetite suppressor I find which can be a good thing if you are attempting to lose weight, though you have to bear in mind the calorie count is through the roof with such foods.

The low carb high fat diet is a much more satisfying lifestyle change because you don't feel hungry or deprived. It's very weird to switch to it and see weight coming off because we have been conditioned for donkey's years to do the exact opposite.
