Re: Is this the oldest photo?

It seems that Sheffield’s connection with the CI. began with the son of a professional soldier named Job Hunneybell (b.1822, Sgt Major 98th South Yorkshire Regiment) whilst serving at the Alderney Garrison, his son Charles (b.1856 in Sheffield) married (1879) an Alderney woman called Emily Houguez. Later their daughter Sarah, married Thomas Charles Audoire in 1900 and they moved to Sheffield. Thomas Charles Audoire in the 1901 Census is listed as a railway blacksmith from Alderney and is living in the Holme Lane- Hillsborough area of Sheffield, not far from where I live. An "Alderney Colony began to take form"

Are you able to identify these ladies? I am wondering if the oldest, or second oldest, is Margaret Houguez (nee Ollivier) - I am related to the Ollivier family. Would be very interested to know who they all are.

Re: Is this the oldest photo?

I have loads of old photos. I have one of my great great grandmother taken around 1876, it is quite freaky, I wouldn't have liked to have seen her on a dark night!

People who looked ancient years ago weren't that old in reality. Both my grandmothers looked old for their years, and wore old granny clothes when they were much younger than I am now.

Re: Is this the oldest photo?

Likewise from family tree research.
My wife's great grandparents- I quess around 1890.
Arthur Horton Ripley and Isabel Ripley. They moved from Sheffield to Romford when Romford Middsex was expanding. He made his fortune as a specialist steel craftsman.
According to my mother in law -Isobel was quite scary (to MIL as a young girl). Isabel was quite small but very busty, as MIL told me 'We kept expecting her to topple forward!'
