They plait them differently too.
When the ones we had here used to sweat, we used to wash them in an attempt to cool them down.

I don’t know Susan it’s something I want to know myself I love the idea of doing portraits ! ( people )However if you want to do animals start off with a good reference photo.
I have long lost the reference photo for this horse - I think it was in a advert so am winging it .
Then grid up the drawing to make it the size you want .
I generally do an underpainting in brown or whatever first and block in afterwards .
The main thing is to have plenty of vino nearby for moments of frustration !
