Re: Old painting revisited

The face on that horse is fabulous, it's very lifelike, that takes skill. Paint me a lion Sis

The mane is thick because I love Spanish horses and they have very thick manes . The Spanish like this and don’t pull ( thin) them as people do in the uk .

They plait them differently too.

Wow they are exceptionally thick and long! I wonder if the horse would prefer to have it pulled , because it must be very warm in the summer!

When the ones we had here used to sweat, we used to wash them in an attempt to cool them down.

Wow, Muddy - how to change a lovely painting into an exceptionally beautiful painting! Your small alterations to the eye and mouth have really brought that horse to life. I wish I had half your talent.

Re: Old painting revisited

I don’t know Susan it’s something I want to know myself I love the idea of doing portraits ! ( people )

However if you want to do animals start off with a good reference photo.

I have long lost the reference photo for this horse - I think it was in a advert so am winging it .

Then grid up the drawing to make it the size you want .

I generally do an underpainting in brown or whatever first and block in afterwards .

The main thing is to have plenty of vino nearby for moments of frustration !

Still not right
Sometimes if you don’t get the initial drawing spot on it never really gets better .

Re: Old painting revisited

Thank you susan
Here is one of my very few attempts at portraiture
( some ten years ago and never finished )
However I am trying to find some portrait classes as I would like to learn how to do them properly .
