Possibly true but what isn't wrong is the contracts do need updating, we need a 24/7 service as it would cut waiting lists and be safer for all. Some doctors seem to get a huge wage for not very many hours work and others are working so many hours they are dangerous.

The entire NHS needs something to make it more efficient without harming the staff and patients.

Julie darlin' - as you well know, contracts cannot be amended unilaterally, and since the Doctors (via the British Medical Association) are seriously objecting to changes which adversely affect their earnings, then they are right to do so. What Hunt wants is that Doctors agree to work an additional three hours without pay!!!

UJ I am facing losing an hour and a half a day and I only do two and a half hours, I have no say in the cuts it's agree or no job at all, I have very little sympathy for people on huge sums being asked to work 3 extra hours a week. At the end of their week they will still earn a hell of a lot of money compared to many others.

Not entirely true Julie darlin' - a contract is a contract, is a contract and the employer has no authority to amend or alter that contract without (your) permission. Any alteration has to be agreed or the employer can dismiss and re-employ on the (amended) new contract.

I appreciate and sympathise with you regarding your employment, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have some sympathy for the Doctors who, like you are being backed into an impossible situation by an arrogant, ignorant employer.

Under the last Labour government GP's had a huge pay rise and were expected to provide more out of hours care, relieving A&E departments. Many accepted the pay but didn't provide much in the way of extra hours cover.
Perhaps they should stop moaning and just get on with the job! That is what the rest of us have to do.

Sad, very sad. Employers are seemingly at liberty to amend, change or alter contracts at will without so much as a squeak of protest. When I was a Trade Union Shop Steward and Branch Secretary, no employer would dare do what Jeremy Hunt is now attempting in the Health Service.

While I'm not usually on Uncle Joe's side, I have a lot of sympathy for the junior doctors. These are people who have undergone a long university course and only then do they really start to learn to be a doctor.

No they do not earn huge sums. Have you looked at the pay scales ? Starting off at £22,636 . It'll be a long time till they're earning anything decent as a specialist registrar.

If we want a top class NHS, we must pay top salaries and attract the best staff. Not treat them like dirt.

Re: Caught out in yet another lie!!!

What did you expect the BMA to say, that Hunt was telling the truth. Both sides lie, manipulate and exaggerate the truth to suit their own ends. Last week it was Hunt saying the BMA were lying. No doubt the answer lies so where between. Either way something needs to be done about the big increase in deaths over the weekend compared to in the week. Someone also needs to get a handle on huge ever increasing costs of the Health Service which are spiraling out of control.

Re: Caught out in yet another lie!!!

Hi

I worked for the Government.

We did not have a pay rise for the last 5 years that I worked.

We got paid an additional 10% for compulsory out of hours working, evenings, nights and weekends, no notice needed, you just had to work as and when required.

We were not covered by the working hours directive, 20 hour shifts were common.

They did change the Contracts, alternative as Joe said, dismissal and re employment, however as they timed it at exactly the same time as the 25% redundancies, no choice but to accept.
