I'm better off now than ever in my life . A state pension each week my own beautiful little house and enough money to have what I would like within reason .

I've never been tight but I've known what it is to be absolutely desperate for money

We needed to be tight with money when the family were young but don't need to be now. The trouble is that being careful with money is a discipline I find hard to break. Not hard up for money now but I still have to force myself to spend it. If I don't, someone else will once I'm gone.

So tight in fact that if anyone asks to borrow a fiver I only agree if they'll instantly give me a tenner change.

I'm quite careful and often feel guilty buying something that I consider extravagant. The one thing I rarely do is leave tips as I don't agree with it. I know the theory is that it boosts poor wages - provided it actually goes to the waiter concerned and not into some communal pot - but I think you pay enough for a meal or hair cut or whatever, and it's unfair to expect you to pay even more.
