So I'd be chucked out in my eighties.
You are right Julie, A one off purchase of today's technology would not be enough to buy a house. However, the steady drip drip drip of package subscriptions and credit arrangements would soon mount up and over a period of time would go a long way to offsetting a mortgage. Not to mention the constant need to replace and upgrade certain items perhaps several times over twenty five years. The average duration of a mortgage.
A decent mid terrace house round here could be had for £80,000, and there is plenty of work available for those that want it. For a first time buyer or young family it would provide that important first step on the property ladder.
We did try to move north once, we got the house in our sights but getting a job that was never going to happen. The bosses we sat in front of being interviewed all said that we were ideal candidates great cvs but we weren't locals and they didn't giv jobs to people moving in stopping their young people getting a house and a job. I had to respect them for that they were looking after their communities but it did mean we were stuck here.
Although swim is very wrong when he says we are poor because of where we live, my rent now is £350 a month because we have paid off our mortgage portion of the flat. I doubt we'd get such a nice flat as we have in such a nice area any where else in the country.
I don't even see us as poor, we have roof, heating and food, we aren't doing so badly really.
When I talk about poverty it's about others, the couple living in a tent on a demolished pub site, the lady been sanctioned and had no money for six weeks because she couldn't read the letter they sent her.
