I only want the winning ticket. I wouldn't bother with the others.

Re: The Lottery

Morning SP, yes indeed, when it first started, HWMO, myself a nd my late dad did two lines each every Saturday at a cost of £6. We won the occasional £10 but that was all. We knew every number in each line off by heart and never missed a week because guaranteed, if we did, we felt that week would be the week when the numbers would come up.

When dad died, we took over his two lines and continued. Unfortunately, they then put the price of the lottery up and upped the numbers which made it much harder to win, so we stopped buying them altogether. It was very hard at first as every Saturday, I was sure because we were no longer doing the Lottery, those known off by heart numbers would come up and we would be the losers. It was like being weaned off something as this went on for months!

I'm so glad we did though as it was a complete waste of money. We have never bought one since.

Re: The Lottery

Few years ago so many conversations began what would you spend the lottery money on, don't hear that much these days.
Always feels too much like gambling for us so after we won enough at the end of year two to cover what we had spend in that two years we stopped and haven't been tempted again.

I think a lot of people stopped doing it when they increased the numbers from 49 to 59.

No, it's worse than nothing because it has cost you far far more than £25 in tickets to achieve that "win". When you win, you actually still lose. Thems the odds.

The only exception is the jackpot.

I agree, Realist. I used to tell people l had won a pound each time on the Lottery because l hadn’t done it!

My sister was elated to win about £200 on Thunderball. Then l asked her how much had she paid in to win it.
She said, she spent £16 a week on the Lottery. She had won nothing really, just got back part of what she had paid in!

She did have more luck on the Irish Lottery and won quite often.

Re: The Lottery

I remember doing the Irish lottery Art and we used to have quite a few wins on that. I also knew someone who won £250,000 on the Thunderball.

Wow, that’s a good win, Longy.

The only drawback of doing the Irish Lottery is you have to go to a betting shop. Can you play it online too?

Re: The Lottery

UK or Irish Lottery, the odds are all absolutely dire, but as most people don't understand odds and therefore don't understand the risks, the lotteries have plenty of mugpunters lining their pockets.

Here are the Irish Lottery prizes and associated odds:

6 numbers - 1 in 10,737,573 - Jackpot
5 numbers + bonus - 1 in 1,789,596 - £73,000
5 numbers - 1 in 44,740 - £1,100
4 numbers + bonus - 1 in 17,896 - £110
4 numbers - 1 in 918 - £36
3 numbers + bonus - 1 in 688 - £18
3 numbers - 1 in 54 - £7
2 numbers + bonus - 1 in 72 - £2

As can be seen the betting proposition here is stupidly poor.
For example, to match 3 numbers, you have a 1 in 54 chance and when you do, you only win £7 !!!!

Only an absolute idiot would participate with such ridiculous odds imho.
