Ooo - too much running?

Here we go again as the doom and gloom merchants focus on something - too much jogging is bad for you apparently.

Too much jogging 'as bad as no exercise at all'

Too much jogging may be as bad for you as not putting on your running shoes at all, a report in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology says.

Scientists studied more than 1,000 healthy joggers and non-joggers over a 12-year period.

Those who jogged at a steady pace for less than two and a half hours a week were least likely to die in this time.

But those who ran more than four hours a week or did no exercise had the highest death rates.
They didn't say what people died of really but it appears to be heart related.

Scientists are not yet sure what is behind this trend - but they say changes to the heart during extreme exercise could contribute.
Well I for one will be glad to get my trainers on again after my knee is better.

I would say 'too much' of anything is bad for you, all things in moderation..

That's logical. 'Little and often' would seem the sensible option...

Re: Ooo - too much running?

My super fit athlete friend used to be a jogger, that led to her having to have operations on both knees, now she does race walking, she was the ladies european champion a few years ago and still enters races all over europe and sometimes further than europe. However she is grounded from competing at the minute due to a deep vein thrombosis in her leg. So I´m not at all sure that being so dedicated to fitness is such a good thing.

My ex colleague from the 70's has had to give up running now ... ops on both knees and there's no cartilage left in one of them

He can still coach and throw the discus

I used to jog and run in the 1970's where you run a bit then jog a bit, at least you could catch your breath inbetween when you jogged if you understand what i mean Nowadays i shuffle ha ha....
