Re: Not going too well for Brexit!!!

High wages lead to higher prices which lead to more demand for high wages. It's not a new concept.

people born in the EU working in the UK were little changed at 2.37 million

For January to March 2018, there were 5.64 million people born abroad working in the UK, but the number of non-UK nationals working in the UK was much lower at 3.54 million. This is because the estimates for people born abroad working in the UK include many UK nationals as explained at Section 2 of this article.

For those interested in the article:

It's too late in the evening to read the article but there are plenty of non eu workers who are not recorded in stats because their visas have run out.

After march 2019 with a deal, after UK and EU have subsequently negotiated a trade deal (2021/2/3?).
Any article not covered by this deal can be sold to any EU country. The price may differ between countries, but every country will charge the same customs tarif.

After march 2019 and no deal. Any article can be sold to the different EUmembers. Prices differ, but each country will charge the same customs tarif.

It doesn't work that way surely? If a person's visa has expired but they haven't left the country they are still known about.

For example we know that there are 50000 people on expired visas in Australia because their visa has expired and they have not left the the country - that's statistics for you. BTW the majority of those expired visa's belong to US and UK citizens - again that's statistics.

They come here on holiday visas Bruce and then disappear. They don't seem to be checked out when they leave and there doesn't appear to be any tracking of their work status. Some of the slave workers they find are in this situation.

Hi

This is true Annie.

They have recently introduced a system to track leavers against those arriving, but it cannot be backdated.

It is relatively easy to track people working through NI Numbers, particularly so called students, but it was rejected on grounds of cost.

We are our own worst enemies.

We are indeed.

I thought they may have introduced something recently, but there will still be little they can do to track those who disappear and work cash in hand. Although it is becoming more difficult to live outside the system.

You used to have to register with the Police station or civic authority in the olden days. But I guess mass immigration made the system unmanageable. I think in Germany they still have such a system.
