eye contact

Are you open and confident enough to maintain eye contact when talking to someone? Or do you find it difficult and end up looking everywhere else but the person's face? It is obviously very difficult for some people, but without a doubt I much prefer to look someone straight in the eye when chatting. Makes for a more meaningful conversation. It does seem to be difficult for some people though.

I have a very bad squint so I feel a bit self-concious about it so tend not to look directly at people's eyes.

Re: eye contact

I always look folks in the eye, though they don’t always do the same. I suppose I’d make a very bad swindler or con man, when I try to get one over on the wife she knows straight away because I am inclined to avoid eye contact, if our eyes clashed during the conversation I will burst out laughing and the games up full stop.

Re: eye contact

I do give quite deliberate and definite eye contact to people - An exception to this is if I am embarrassed and then I will look away or look down, avoiding direct eye contact.
I am myopic and wear specs., but as I have got older my eyes have changed and I find that I can see middle and short distances better without my specs. even my varifocal lenses are not good at these distances. Because of being myopic, not only are my pupils a little more dilated than other people's, but I also have the habit of looking over the top of my specs. at people, which makes me look a bit "school marmish or disapproving. Also I often take my specs. off when I am in contact with people. All this is so that I can se them better. However, I have found that not everyone seems comfortable when I do it so I explain that I can see them better without my specs. and this uncovering of my eyes then often makes people relax.
I like other people to give me eye contact and always notice if they don't and wonder why.

Re: eye contact

I always give eye contact and we are encouraged to do so at work. I find it easy to do so but I know some struggle with it.

Always with a smile too.

I prefer eye contact and I just hate speaking to anyone wearing sunglasses.

Re: eye contact

Oh Barry, I am with you on that one! I feel like asking the person to remove them.

Thanks for starting this thread.

I try to maintain eye contact but hate it when the person I'm having a conversation with does the opposite. Saw my step niece recently and she looked everywhere but at my face! Shan't rush to talk to her again.

Re: eye contact

i always think it's so strange that someone has a long drawn out conversation without looking at you. It's almost as though they're talking to themselves. Strange
