Re: New build or character

If money were no object I would go for character every time. My bungalow was built in the 1960s when they still used proper bricks and cavity walls. It may not have much character, but it is easy to maintain. Would not consider buying anything they throw together these days.

Re: New build or character

If money was no object, I would like a character house built to modern standards (well, mine) I would make sure the walls measured exactly the width of whole strips (multiple) of wallpaper, no papering around corners! The rooms would have to be the width of carpet rolls, no joins, no trunking and every wall, door and window perfectly vertical & horizontal, lights in the absolute centres of the rooms! I'd drive 'em all nuts!

Re: New build or character

To look at I much prefer older houses, but to live with day to day it'd have to be a new one.
My DIY skills don't go much further than changing a bulb so an old house would be too expensive to maintain and heat

Re: New build or character

Our previous property was circa 1610, we now live in a modern house and pleased to do so! There is always something which needs doing to a place of character/age!

Re: New build or character

We have a bit of a passion for prefabs and wooden houses if/when we move next that's what we will be looking for something odd and different and unconventional.

Our present flat was a new build when we moved in in 1989. Had many many problems when we moved in and again now it's starting to age. I can't see them still here in 100 years time like some houses do.

Re: New build or character

Old house , every time, ours is a 4 story Georgian, so plenty of room for us, right in the town centre and an added bonus, a walled garden, which is quite decent size so not too much up keep . Doesn't seem to need much upkeep.[touch wood].

So all in all happy bunny.
