1 shilling (bob) = 5p
2 shillings = 10p
10 shillings = 50p

etc.

I won't mention half a crown (2 shillings and sixpence). Oh go on then, it's 12 and a half pence.

The previous ten bob note had been replaced with the 50p piece two years earlier.

That's right, we did. The shilling was treated as 5p. The new 5p coins looked much the same as the shilling.
There were also new half-pennies as well. Can't remember when they were phased out.
I think florins were treated as 10p pieces, but I can't quite remember. Edit....yes..see below..

I stick all my 1p coins into a piggy bank now, and once in a blue moon I count them out and take them to the bank. It takes ages and you don't get very much! After all, it takes a hundred of them to make just a pound!

Edit...

I'd forgotten, but we'd had the new 5, 10 and 50p coins since 1968 and 1969 already! Alongside the shillings, florins and ten-bob notes.

And they're too light to use for Big Ben's clock adjustments.

Totall agree.

We didn't used to call them 'd's' before, did we. e.g. 5s.10d.

I seem to remember we started calling them p because 'new pence' was a mouthful, and we had to differentiate between the old pennies and the new ones, else we would have been in a right two and eight!

not new anymore but still going strong, as long as Tesco etc... have fantastic offers at only 99p.
If and when they get rid of these useless copper coins, vendors are going to have to stop using these silly 99p figures.

I suppose it will then become only 95p instead!

Re: Happy Birthday to the 'New Pence'.

I don't remember it too clearly ... I was only 19.

But I do remember new years day 2002, I was resident in Portugal when they switched from Escudos to Euros, now that was confusing, and yes a giant rip off.
