Coon no more

Coon cheese's name will be changed after a campaign by activists who said it had racist connotationse

Coon's owners, dairy products company Saputo, confirmed the change today after being written a letter of complaint in June by activist Stephen Hagan, who has been fighting for 20 years to have the name changed.

Edward William Coon patented a process used to manufacture cheese in the US in 1926.

The brand's website says the cheese was first manufactured in Australia in November 1935 and was wrapped in "traditional red waxed cloth".

That lead to it becoming known as "Red Coon," according to Saputo's website.

But Dr Hagan said the name had purely racist meanings.

The cheese was previously wrapped in black and given the name "Coon" as a joke, he said.

All this really is getting too ridiculous for words. I will use just a few though to say there's a cheese here in the UK called 'Red Leicester', possibly due to its colour being orange, no idea of where the name originated. So does the name mean that someone from a 'Red Indian' tribe (indigenous people of America), maybe living in the city of Leicester here in the UK, is going to object? Maybe for similar 'racist reasons' you describe in your post and want the name changed!

The world is 'going down the tubes' with all this rubbish going on! IMO

That word has been banned for many years here Bruce but I wasn't aware that ones name could be banned

It's a good job Cilla left when she did.

It is DISGUSTING that a racist name like that is only now being discarded, it should have been done years ago.

Yes perhaps it is one of the more offensive slurs... But Coon was the mans name.....should his family also change their name.

Coco is another word they want banned... because of the estimated 250-000 slave children are working in Cocoa plantations in the Ivory Coast. Most employed by blacks.

Seven years ago changes were promised.

Now BLM movement should make this a big issue, bet no one heard of any protests concerning this in the uk, maybe just CoCo pops, which Coco is regard as a racist slur that should be done away with.

Yet Lewis Hamilton, one of the latest celebrity BLM campaigner didn't have a second thought naming his Dog Coco... and no one said sod all.

So what do his descendants do?
Or anyone with that surname?
It's his name. ... like everyone called Black or White .

I suppose we'll have to change the name of garden tools next and go dig the garden with a metal square with a handle rather than a spade. Downright ridiculous.

If it was my name I would have long since changed it.

Oh for **** sake don't be so ******* sanctimonious.

Next thing will be having to abandon the names of some of the ******* flowers we grow in the ******* garden because of cultural appropriation of some other tommy rot.

What are we to call ***** mold on our roses, or while on the subject of roses ****** roses themselves or in the veg patch ******** sprouts.

Then there's the **** hound to be renamed or in the case of cats the ***** ****.

It's bloody stupid.

Re: Coon no more

If such names are found to be offensive, would someone please tell me when such names as "The National Black Police Federation" and many other organisations pertaining only to black and ethnic minorities, are going to be done away with, as I personally find such names offensive and racist.
After all, we all know the outcry that would occur if the word Black was replaced with White, so why is this allowed. It surely doesn't bode well for equality does it?
