If it looks like I might get told off for a minor misdemeanour I usually get one in first and say in a little voice I know I am doing this wrong, but I was not sure what to do. I deliberately come across as non confrontational - a bit bewildered even - and usually folks feel sorry for me and send me on my way. Works very well for me. I've done this for years.

We got told off today for contravening the floor arrows even though there was no one there (infact, I was avoiding a long queue of people) The result is that I will never go back there but I guess others would just accept it.

What's funny is that if I had followed the arrows to the letter, it would have been impossible to leave the shop.

I think I might have used this occasionally. It takes the wind out of their sails.
