Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

The U.S. 7th Fleet has seven combat ships — four destroyers, a dock landing ship, a littoral ship and a minesweeper — at sea in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region, Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Timothy Hawkins said. One destroyer is conducting “presence operations” in the South China Sea, designed to reinforce the U.S. ship’s right to be there, he said.
and so the mexican dance continues with ambassadors being summoned to various offices and given a telling off. This could go on for ever!

“We will fly, sail, and operate wherever the international law permits, and we will do that at the times and places of our choosing, and there’s no exception to that,” Carter said in Boston, where he and Secretary of State John Kerry were meeting with their Australian counterparts. “Whether it’s the Arctic, or the sea lanes that fuel international commerce widely around the world, or the South China Sea.”
current count of ownership is:

Vietnam occupies 48 of the Spratlys, Taiwan occupies one, the Philippines occupies eight, Malaysia occupies five and China occupies eight, according to the report.

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

Hi

In 1996 Tom Clancy wrote a book called SSN, about an American SSN which single handedly wiped out the Chinese Navy in the Spratly Islands.

It was a best seller and caused some consternation at the time, as it was based on a War Games Scenario used by Military Planners. quite accurate and followed the thinking at that time that the Spraltlys were one of the main flashpoints for a possible Nuclear War.

It was American Propaganda, at that time the Chinese Military was very basic.

How times have changed, the Chinese have now got a very efficient Military machine and they also now have the financial might to go with it.

The War Game scenario has been regularly updated since then, but the basic tenet has not changed.

The Chinese are feeling their feet, they do not want the USA ruling the roost in their backyard.

The Chinese hate the Japanese, they have long memories, the Koreans also hate the Japanese, for the same reasons, WW11, they suffered greatly.

Japan has one of the biggest Military in the world, they are ranked 9th, and, with American support have just altered their rules of engagement, they are now allowed to deploy outside Japan.

This has got the Koreans fuming, and South Korea has just formed an alliance with China, moving away from their long term allies, the USA.

What is China up too?

Well they realise that they are years behind the USA in Aircraft Carriers, so they are building their own fixed aircraft carriers on the Spratlys.

Much cheaper, far easier to defend and operate and which will give them air superiority over the entire region.

Oil?

No, half of the World's Trade goes through the South China Sea, and control of the trade routes is the real prize.

The Spratlys have only just come to public knowledge, for the Military Planners they have been known for the last 30 years as one of the most likely causes of a war.

A bigger flashpoint than the Middle East.

Hi

Wrong!!!

Actually I stated that the Chinese are years behind.

A factual statement, about 15 years before the Chinese can construct and train Carrier Groups with the capability to take on the USA Carrier Groups.

The single carrier the Chinese have is an old Russian one, conventionally powered, not Nuclear powered and the Chinese have no at sea refuelling capability, so the thing is useless operating at range.

The bases in the Spratlys can accommodate aircraft which will match the USA Carrier Groups, China has therefore closed the gap 15 years ahead .

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

this is a game of cat and mouse - the ozzie airforce has been crafty and probably responding to USA 'egging on' to fly over the Spratly Islands whilst broadcasting a statement to the Chinese ships below "calling Chinese shipping this is an australian airforce flight exercising the right under international laws to fly over international waters"

no one got shot.

as I say cat and mouse and could continue for years

ps: would love to visit there!

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

Well today there is a fuss that the Americans have flown a B52 Bomber close to one of them. Why did they do this? The official argument about bad weather is rubbish as surely it would have had a GPS navigator retrofitted by the nation which invented and runs GPS - your car SatNav would have given better accuracy than that! As for intelligence we already know from the published images ( and the military satellites could deliver better accuracy than that ) that China is building an airbase and port on one of the artificial islands. An enormous B52 is perhaps the least inconspicuous thing they could have put in the sky and is pure sabre rattling which is dangerous with an adversary as powerful as China?

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

the big powers are being dragged into this by the smaller nations they support, like vietname; phillipines; south korea etc etc who know they cannot take on China alone but are only too willing to call in the yanks and ozzies - I am surprised that the brits don't want a piece for the action!!

Do they need carriers ?
" China has developed a long-range missile which can take out an aircraft carrier in a single strike.
The Dong-Feng 21D is the first land-to-ship missile in the world.
It can target an aircraft carrier 2,600 kilometres away and put it out of action .....

The U.S. is cutting defence spending.
China is massively increasing hers.

Re: The Spratly Islands Paradise?

this is not about fighting a war FGS - this is posturing and stealth in stealing land or even building new land - china is the last nation to start a war - it has just negotiated new trade deals with OZ and becoming more engaged in international discussions at all levels - it can bide its time on this one - meanwhile no one is actually stopping it in its construction projects out there.

OZ and the yanks are showing their support for the smaller nations - very touching!

That bit's right.
For decades, the U.S. has had a plethora of carriers, nuclear subs and military bases "posturing", threatening and intimidating the four corners of the earth.

As U.S. power declines, it seems that China is hell-bent on usurping the role.
