Re: Oops - another hole blown in Osborne's budget!!!
Hi
The Bank Mellat case began in 2013. In February 2014, the bank filed a damages claim in London's High Court after Britain's Supreme Court quashed UK sanctions imposed on the bank over alleged links with Tehran's nuclear programme. The British government filed a defence in response.
We put the sanctions on, under pressure from the USA.
Our own Supreme Court ruled against our own Government.
The EU Court has merely reaffirmed that decision and applied it to the whole of the EU.
The bank can now claim against the whole of the EU, not just the UK.
It is our own Supreme Court who has ruled against the UK Government and the amount of damages, if any, will be be determined by a UK Court, not the EU or any EU Court.
The USA of course, will merely not accept any claim.
Mugs again, we really are.
The sensible thing to do of course is to tell the Bank that if they pursue this claim we will not give them a license to operate in the UK.
Will we do this?
Of course not, we are spineless idiots.
