Good morning Thursday !

Good morning everyone.

Forecast is for a heat wave today - due to hit 71f by mid morning! If it does there will be a hosepipe ban tomorrow - just wait and see.

Accompanying a friend to an early hospital appointment - she is collecting me about 7:45am. Not sure what is happening after that.

Have a fun day.

My Australian better half has asked me why we Brits call it a hosepipe and not just a hose.I couldn't tell her.

Morning all.
Yes it's going to be nice today so I'll make sure I'm outside this afternoon and not sweating it out at the gym. That would be a waste of good weather.

She has a point when you think about it tbh mate. How can it be a hose and a pipe? It's a hose isn't it?

Have a nice day all

Good morning from ‘out in the rural sticks’ to you all!

A chilly and overcast morning here, some hope though as there are blue specks of sky in between grey clouds! The weather forecast does not mention that word ‘rain’ though so maybe in with a chance of a reasonable day.

Nothing planned other than to set my sights on dealing with those weeds called Triffids that have overtaken the garden!

Enjoy your day everybody, whatever you may be doing.

Good morning all, still cloudy here but dry at the moment and forecast for brighter later, up to 19 deg they say, how will we ever bear it...

No plans yet but if it does stay dry then I've some catching up to do in the garden.

Enjoy your day everyone

The reason could possibly be that a 'hosepipe' is a flexible pipe carrying water but 'hose' has another meaning, it also relates to clothing.

The links for what used to be called the Oxford English Dictionary (now renamed for some reason) might explain:

hosepipe
'A flexible tube conveying water, used chiefly for watering plants and in firefighting.'

https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/hosepipe

hose
'Stockings, socks, and tights (especially in commercial use)'

https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/hose

I also noticed though a phrase used in New Zealand:

New Zealand informal
Rain heavily.
"it's fair hosing down this morning"

Hi

Good Morning All.

No heatwave here, it is dank and grey.

Zac and Derek are back from Poland today, they will notice the difference, it was 32C there yesterday.

I twisted my leg yesterday, so a day on the sofa today.

Have a good day all.

I had the online Oxford English Dictionary set up on a bookmark as it's always in use with me. Over the years it's become my 'bible' for word reference, mostly due to my working life in printing and advertising. Then, very recently, I found that link and the web page was slightly different and called 'Lexico.com'.

I have no idea why or when exactly this happened, it's now my intention to find out why as that will satisfy my curiosity.

The online website still has all the same features, such as the thesaurus and grammar sections, plus other languages it supports.
