Deposit? Say 20% tops. Probably less leaving iro £62,000 to be financed. With a joint monthly income of only 20 grand before tax that mortgage would be like falling off a log.

Mortgage repayments would be about £340 pcm on a 25 year / 3% deal.

If people concentrated on affordability rather than desirability (nowt much wrong with Birkenhead - it's across the river from Liverpool) a very different picture emerges when home ownership is concerned.
If everyone moved to birkenhead then 3 bed houses there would no longer cost 78k. If everyone could get a 3 bed house for 78k in an area that was within commuting distance of jobs then we would have no problem. No point buying a mansion in Scotland if you work in Birmingham.

It's funny how all the people added so much more value 20 years ago. When they only worked normal hours too in one job! What has changed?

Annie, just check out a few estate agents current web sites. I did in order to get that price.

In any case commuting across the water to Liverpool, a pretty big city, well perhaps pretty is stretching it a bit, is a piece of cake and certainly affordable.

House prices are often low in areas of high crime or deprivation because people don't want to live there. Birkenhead has high drugs/gun crime. As well as this :

But cross The River and a very different picture emerges.

A joint income for a couple working in Liverpool of £20,000 is very easy to earn and commuting across the river really isn't an arm and a leg.

As for Birkenhead it's as good a place as anywhere to get a first house.

Get it and tart it up and flog it to work up the ladder.

When it comes to criminal crap holes there are a great many worse places than there. Most of London, Luton, much of Birmingham, in fact anywhere with similar demographics are to be avoided.

But I only used Birkenhead as an example of how with just a little effort getting on the housing ladder is entirely possible and practical if only you for what you can afford and not what you would like.

Re: Affordable homes

I doubt many people feel they would be better off moving hundreds of miles to live in what may be a rough neighbourhood riddled with crime. Anything not nailed down is nicked in such places and you're not safe walking down the street. Would you eave your friends and family for this?

Not nailed down? Not safe walking down the street? Were talking about Birkenhead, not Luton or places with a similar demographic!
