Mystery attack!!

Two weeks ago I planted a basket with mondo grass & ivy & stood it in a bucket down the garden until it got going.

When I looked at it today it was in this disgusting mess - the compost looked as though it had been blown into a mound & it was covered in some sort of shiny stuff - also spilled over to the ground!!

Can anybody help please?

Re: Mystery attack!!

It could possibly be birds taking the matting for their nests. I had a similar thing with our hanging basket at the front of the house and I thought it was vandals until I got up early one day and spotted a crow pulling it to pieces.

Re: Mystery attack!!

A few years ago I caught a squirrel pulling out all the matting from one of my hanging baskets, fortunately the basket was almost over.

Birds will take anything to make a nest, but what was the shiny brown stuff & where did it come from?

Re: Mystery attack!!

I hate to say it .... but slugs make a helluva lot of stretchy mucky slime for their gooey eggs to mature in.
Perhaps something like that was already in the compost and this warm, humid weather and downpours helped it along?

Re: Mystery attack!!

Thanks Ripple - that is the answer.
I mixed water retentive granules with the compost. I guess I used too much.

That idea had been put to me earlier by my daughter when she came to visit.

It has to be the correct answer. Problem solved thank goodness.
