It's a three day visit, I mentioned in post #4, to break the deadlock on some sensitive areas. So nothing new yet.

Under the present EU deal the UK exports over 3,000 ton fish to japan, mainly cod. Like I said before, it's mainly a rollover deal truss is trying to close. https://www.fdf.org.uk/exports/ukexp...019.aspx#item9

Re: Japan Trade Deal in Weeks

Apropos to trade deals in general, I found this amongst the comments below the UK-Japan deal article in today's DE. I have asked for source but the answer hasn't come back yet. Having said that, this comment is still an interesting read imho:

Quote:
UK exports of goods and services to the (non-EU) world: £398.3bn
Annual growth in non-EU exports: +10.7%
Non-EU exports: 57% of total, and growing fast
Exports of goods and services to the EU27: £300.3bn
Annual growth in EU27 exports: +1.2%
EU exports: 43% of total, and falling
UK’s trade SURPLUS with the non-EU world: +£46.0bn
This increased by 27.1% in 2019 alone
UK’s trade DEFICIT with the EU27: £71.9bn
This worsened by 8.9% in 2019 alone
In 2019, the UK had a current account DEFICIT with the EU of £109.9 billion
That’s almost -£110 BILLION, IN ONE YEAR
The UK had a current account SURPLUS of £26.1 billion with the rest of the world.
The EU's surplus of £109 billion, will be gone,we will have it, not all doom a gloom for the UK,is it?
P.S The Japan deal will take 15 years to be fully ratified,EU might not last that long.

Percy, it has dawned on you that if the import from the EU deminishes in financial terms, and the import from the rest of the world stays the same, the relative contribution of imports from the rest of the world expressed as a percentage increases. That increase in percentage shouldn't be used to claim that imports from the rest of the world is increasing.
Now read the figures you quote again.

The Japanese and British governments are expected to introduce a rule under their forthcoming trade deal to protect famous products they make, informed sources said.
Subject to the rule are mainstay agricultural and alcohol products, such as Scotch and Kobe beef, the sources said Saturday.

The two nations are in the final stages of talks to make the protections as strong as those laid out in Japan’s economic partnership agreement with the European Union.

The japanese are holding off, waiting to see how UK fares with EU. If UK cannot reach a deal with EU which enable tariff free export of cars from UK to EU, the japanese are not interested in a deal with UK.
The japanese need the UK as a base to move their cars via UK into EU, without tariffs.

British Trade Minister Lizz Truss said in a statement that they "have reached consensus on the major elements of a deal".However, despite reassurances that the two countries had by and large reached an agreement, auto tariffs and agricultural products have proven to be a sticking point in the negotiations.

Japan had hoped to lift tariffs on auto and auto parts earlier than in the current trade deal between the EU and Japan, which will phase out import tariffs on Japanese vehicles by 2026.
