The Case of Sally Challen (BBC Two) 09/12/2019

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-r...hing-for-women

The Case of Sally Challen (BBC Two) is a 90-minute film documenting the appeal of the eponymous 65-year-old who, after 31 years of marriage, killed her husband Richard with 20 blows from a hammer as he sat at the dinner table one night nine years ago. She was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum tariff of 22 years.
The full extent of the injustice only became clear when Challen contacted the human rights lawyer Harriet Wistrich, and her cause was taken up by Justice for Women, which specialises in supporting women prosecuted for killing violent male partners. Challen furnished the organisation with a full account: Richard had raped her many times, endlessly humiliated her and constrained her freedoms in a million ways, large and small.

Wistrich and her team began to put together what would become a landmark case, arguing that Challen had been the subject of coercive control. In the years since Challen’s trial, the nonphysical means abusers use to instil fear in their victims, to erode their sense of agency, worth and esteem, and to bind them with invisible chains, had become recognised as an offence.
A fascinating insight into a case with complex origins and tragic consequences.

I won't spoil my recommendation with details and I suggest that prospective viewers DO NOT follow the link above until after viewing.

Watched this last night at a friends house. It was by turns sad, interesting and amazing. I won't reveal the outcome - but I believe it was right.

Yes I feel it was right too .

Unless you have been in a coercive controlling or abusive relationship you cant really understand . From this comes very low self esteem , depression and deep anger amongst many other unknown feelings . In the end it feels normal and the feeling of not deserving anything better .

Having the hammer was a sign of premeditated something maybe a way of threatening or protecting herself .

A terrible time for her children too . I'm glad she is free.

Yes I'm glad she's been freed and when you read that even her husband's family were supportive of her appeal that says a lot?
There will be those still who believe it was premeditated but they were talking getting back together ? Unbelievably he set down conditions one of which was she wasn't to interrupt him when he was speaking.
Anyway this was a landmark case , no doubt other women will want to have theirs looked at ?

After all a person can only take so much abuse then something snaps . This woman was pushed to the limit , of course what she did is wrong , and that moment of madness happened and no doubt she for that time was mentally unstable and a terrible thing happened . Abuse over a period of time strips the person's ability to be themselves and lose self esteem believing they cant cope alone that's possibly why she was talking about getting back with him . Unless it's happened to you personally no one can understand . I'm so pleased that today there is help out there if only the abused would reach out but that is a fear in itself.

At one time a man or woman could beat their partner and children and it was called a domestic .

All very sad . I wish her well

Interesting isn't it Muddy. Personally I'd have ditched him and kicked his butt ( the older woman and wiser that I am now braver too ) but I think it's the co-dependance thing again . She said she loved him I'd say she lost herself because of the control hed had over her .

Something I did think about though, she hit him 20 times . That must have taken some time . I would have thought after one wallop she would have run screaming out the door but she didnt . It went on and on .

Madness I think . Poor woman

I didn’t see the programme but l have read about her in the past in articles and how her family were trying to get her out of prison.

Yes, he was a brute of a man but to kill him.... Mmmm, you might feel you’d like to kill someone like that but to actually do it?
I find that questionable.

But the topic is about the programme so had you watched it , which was about the new evidence the judges decided upon deserved her release, you might have found out why .
I changed my opinion completely about her actions after I'd watched it .
