Re: Should Elderly People Drive Automatic Cars?

Having read all of the Topic, the does seem to be a number of stupid, or accidental, driving incidents, which make the headlines.

We are lucky that there are no such incidents by drivers of manual vehicles.

Anybody have any balanced data showing data for Manual versus automatic?

I understand what you are saying Ted but in my case, the car just kept going, albeit slowly but the torque drove it past my car and into my house. If it had been a manual car, it would have stalled.

There are different hand control systems but this is what's fitted to our car. Both hands stay in contact with the accelerator and steering wheel apart from when using one hand to brake.

Mrs mart has never had an accident during in the many years she has been driving cars with hand control adaptations.

With the hand controls switched off, I drive the car using only my right foot ..and the steering wheel of course.

That must have taken a bit of getting used to. I found that interesting, thanks.

It does take practice but she drives the car pretty well with those controls. I have tried them but can't use them as well as she does. The controls are the more expensive sort (GuidoSimplex). A fortune has been spent over the years on adaptations to the various cars we've had.

Of course she started as a relatively young woman, so not an aged driver of an automatic car. Neither of us were ..but we have got to be old now (me especially). I don't feel we would be more accident prone now we are older but I expect that applies to everyone whether they are driver of an automatic car or not.

Re: Should Elderly People Drive Automatic Cars?

I've had our new automatic car for a month now (Toyota Prius+ 7 seater for the grandkids) and, although I've never driven automatic before, the transition has been seamless. I would never dream of attempting left foot braking - my left foot doesn't have the delicacy of touch that my right foot does. I think the kind of accidents people have been referring to owe more to the state of mind/physical abilities of the driver than they do to the car.
