Us oldies are out of work and the numbers are rising.

A sign of the times now retirement is getting later?

My husband hated his job and h applied for tons of jobs so he could leave, got only a few interviews but finally after 3 and a half years some one had given him a chance. He.s 61, they say there is no ageism in the workplace but we aren't quite so sure.

Good thing I don't live in Shropshire then.
I will be looking for a new job later this year but probably with the same company but with no more shift work.
Otherwise, if something comes along somewhere else without me taking a pay cut then I'll take it. Doubt that will happen though.

I think that there simply fewer jobs. Automation decimated the labour intensive industries and much of what was left moved overseas.

well weren't we warned all this was coming?? and we'd all have more time to relax and do leisure things!!!

how do you get that? We don't retire until we are 67

Doesn't surprise me.

When Companies start to "downsize" it would appear to be normal to focus on the over 50s first.

That's not always a bad thing, assuming that the over 50s might be entitled to a little more, in the way of pension/ redundancy money, than the other two thirds.

People over 50 might even benefit, from the job market, if the hirers realise that with that age comes experience and skills.

There was a poor old lady on the till at my local Tesco .
She looked about ninety .

Where I used to work, the oldest member of staff there has just turned 70 and has no intention of retiring

Where I work now there are 2 over 65s, also no intention of retiring

A lot of check out staff in the shops in town are elders, by that I mean well past retirement age.

When the team who came to pile our extension came out, there was a fellow there in his 70's, still capable of making a mix and wheeling a barrow

Age is just a number and if you want to work there is work to be had

Age is not just a number .
It's a slowing down of physical capability .
There are of course exceptions but these are exceptions .
