National parks in Africa carry large quantities of tusks,which they
obtain from. culling & from natural causes.
These are periodically destroyed by burning, this is carried out with
high media coverage.The reason given for doing this is that it will
destroy the market for ivory,and thus stop poaching.
I have long questioned this policy, which is supported by animal
rights groups, because l tjhink that if they are already collecting the
tusks on a natural basis, why not put them up for sale by auction
instead of burning, this should deter poachers from the risky
business of poaching as long as prices are not too high for them.
This would also create a small income for the national parks.
So, instead of killing living, viable animals,we just wait for them to
die, as we are currently doing.l cannot understand the present
policy we are following at all. I know there is a lot of corruption in
high places, but l can't believe animal rights groups can be
involved.
