Bye bye XP

As you undoubtably know one of Micro$oft's better operating operating systems Windows XP is now no longer supported. I had one computer that used it, unfortunately it was the my old Dell Mini 10, a netbook and hence one of those computers that needs the latest patches to protect it from harm on the Internet.

Because of its age I wasn't keen to put a more modern version of Micro$ofts bloatware on it so thought I would give Linux a try. Settled on Ubuntu for no particular reason other than it seemed one of the most popular. Installed initially to run along side Win XP but yesterday wiped XP and now Ubuntu is the only operating system on this machine.

Was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to install and the working components included. It has Firefox, Libre Office and Thunderbird installed as standard. Everything worked virtually out of the box so to speak.

So if you need a free replacement for XP you can do worse than trying Linux, no more difficult to learn than Android, indeed very similar (same base system), even has its own equivalent of Google Play. Very pleased with it (though I have more to learn)

Re: Bye bye XP

many of us don't like change, I loved XP because it was user friendly and I'd had it for several years, I really didn't want to see it go, we like those things around us that are familiar and make us feel comfortable like an old pair of comfy shoes.
I now have Windows 7 and don't have any issues with it, different strokes for different folks I'd say

Still have it on my PC which is not connected to the Internet, use it for my photography P&P. I agree it was one of the more stable interfaces.

If you haven't done it, it might be worth connecting it to the Internet just once to get all the security fixes for XP.

I agree with you it was one of Microsoft's best (like WIN7) however I suspect Win8 will join Vista, ME and DOS4 as their worse creations.

Once I got used to it I found win 8 fine, each time they change I have a fit but just a few weeks into using it I suddenly find it's quite good.

I still have XP on my PC and am hanging onto to it for as long as I can. None of my graphic software works with W8, which is what is on my laptop.

Re: Bye bye XP

Well I still have XP on my computor, The one I'm using right now. I have never had any problems with it.
And as I run programs on it which are uncompatible with other systems unless I upgrade them, COST of over 2 to 3 thousand dollars, I won't be scrapping it for a long time yet.
I even run my own Web site on it that has Pro-Chat and Blog facilities on it.

P.S.PEOPLE CAN EASILLY DOWNLOAD PHOTOES ON IT ALSO AND THEY DON'T NEED ""URL'S""To do it.

Of course you haven't had any problems! XP has been supported, patched and upgraded by Micro$oft until 8th April 2014 so if you have kept it up to date there is no reason to worry for a little while yet.

However if you intend to keep using it on the Internet for longer than a few more months then expect interesting times ahead. It will be fascinating to know when the first hacker 'breakthrough' occurs. You probably won't even be aware of it.
