1936: Night clubs breaking the law

In novels of the time frequent reference is made to establishments being raided by the police. The problem usually concerned the licensing laws. Evelyn Waugh comes to mind. The young woman is trying to reassure her mother. After all, if she was going to spend the night in a police station cell then she can’t come to any harm.

1936: Life among the intellectuals

Today’s young people would find it difficult to grasp the hold that Communism held over their equivalents 80 or so years ago. The three people present in this cartoon are wearing the correct clothes for their time. What is the point about Marx? Surely to point out that his writings are so well established among the adults that only the children need to learn them.
