Re: Price of fish and chips!

Fish & chips is no longer a reasonably priced meal.

Portions are getting smaller and smaller.

Down our way you will see very little change out of £20.00 for two people, ( including 2 fizzy drinks )

Re: Price of fish and chips!

Most Saturdays Sheila cooks her own chips in a deep-fat fryer and I go to our local chippy for a beautiful piece of fresh fish big enough for the two of us to share for £3.80. How's that for value ?

Blooming heck! Well my meal was certainly cheap! I was talking to a neighbour this morning and she told me I could have had the same meal down in the town centre here for £3, including a coke, for each of us!! Don't know what it would be like though

Many thanks boys

Good value there Alan

Re: Price of fish and chips!

There's a family Fish & chip restaurant here in Brighton (Bardsleys) http://www.bardsleys-fishandchips.co.uk/eat-in
that have been around for many decades. For fish, I much prefer battered Huss (sometimes referred to as rock salmon) as there's only one bone (the spine) in it and no fiddly little bones.

Re: Price of fish and chips!

When I was a kid we used to live on fish and chips
Nowadays I very rarely get them from a shop. The ones around here
are cooked in dreadful oil and they leave the skin on.
Coming from Yorkshire where they know how to cook fish and chips
I have to wait until I go back to Leeds to get some.
Being a bingo addict I go to the Mecca and there they
have 2 meals for just £6.95. We normally get fish, chips and mushy
peas and a Latte for a £1 extra. Believe me they are really nice.
Otherwise I make my own.

Harry Ramsdens was one of the worst fish and chip experiences we have ever had, much vaulted as the best when it was mediocre to say the least.

If you want really good fish and chips the Knaphill fish bar run by a chinese family is by far the best. Huge portions too so we buy one and it's enough for 3 of us.

Lovely friendly people too.

Re: Price of fish and chips!

Chips here are £1.50 a portion, fish I don't buy until I'mat my mothers on Merseyside. I can't eat the fish down here(skin on and bones)
For £4.50 a few chippies around here sell 'fish bites' and chips. This is usually 5/6 small pieces of fish(about 2" long) in batter with no skin or bones.
On Merseyside it's usually 3 fish, 3 mushy peas and 1 portion of chips for about £15

Re: Price of fish and chips!

Having read all posts, I think we do alright at our 'chippy'
Cod and chips twice, pickled onion, wally, buttered roll and a tub of mushy peas for just under £11.00. Good size portions too (always too much for me - I used to share with our old dog. He would lie on the floor nearby and pretend not to look at me from between his paws )

It's about £5-£6 here for a 'fish supper' as we call them.
Haddock is the favourite fish.
