George perhaps you should be pleased they got the name wrong if the mention was favourable.

Any mention of somewhere being pleasant can results in an invasion by hordes of 'trippers' .

Very few outsiders pronounce correctly the name of the village in which I live (which shall remain nameless) because some letters are silent.

Re: Got to have a rant..

The travel report was about an overturned lorry on an 'A' road that doesn't actually pass through the village. I think it was just to give the approximate location as the road passes through very few places.

Ah well, that was our moment of 'fame'.

Re: Got to have a rant..

Irish names and places are always pronounced wrongly, but it never bothers most of us, we’re used to it now. I had to laugh at the racing commentator a few years ago calling the races from Navan, he pronounced it Nah-van instead of Nav-an. There are hundreds of them mispronounced, but then again I get an awful lot very wrong myself, even the Irish ones so I can't complain.
I learned one Italian word on Sunday from my grandson 'Aqa' he just loves messing with water, he's doing alright with the two languages, his mother speaks to him in Italian and his dad speaks to him in Dublin, a form of English, a little bit like Liverpool speak.
All the streets, roads, train stations, and towns have bilingual signs all over the country here.

Re: Got to have a rant..

In Derbyshire there is Calver, pronounced "Carver"

Edensor, pronounced "Ensor"

Eyam, pronounced "Eem"

and a favourite of mine, thanks to Terry Wogan who could never pronounce it, Alsager (not in Derbyshire), friends of ours from Alsager used to get really mad with poor old Terry who always pronounced it "Alsaggar".

A Northamptonshire/Bucks border village is called Bozeat. Newcomers always say it how it looks, but locals pronounce it "Boshat".
