Call the police. If it is nothing, they would rather come to a false alarm than to a tragic scene. Your neighbor might really need help. This is about their well-being, after all.

Once all is well, you might try to figure out some secondary emergency plans, like the phone numbers of other family members, swapping keys etc.

Let us know how things are, and good for you for being a kind neighbor.

I agree. If you are close enough friends, a key swap might be an idea.

They rushed out without informing us to the maternity ward.
They usually let me know, and I either get a key, or I look after the dog.
