Re: Clubs & groups.

U3A is a worldwide organisation which offers a huge variety of activities. If you haven't tried it - give it a go before deciding you're not a "club" person!!

There are lots of other opportunities to join other people in an activity which appeals to you - search google for "Meet Up". Put your location in to the search box and see what Meetup groups there are in your area............or, you could become a Meetup group leader if your activity isn't listed.
It's good to socialise and it's good to have activities you're interested in and share them with others..........

Yes, that was me - nice to know others are still mentally young.

The main topic of boring conversation I find, apart from who snuffed it recently and how the funeral went, is the endless comparisons of who is on what medication and the moaning about side effects. Then we get the aches, pains and whatnot. Give it a rest for pity's sake!

I'd love to hear about them.
I've mentioned it elsewhere but once I retired I gave up my previous volunteering activities to join a couple of seniors' organisations. One is more of a social group of which I am now secretary where my role is mainly admin and minute taking however I do organise some of the activities such as monthly bus trips and weekly computer/tech classes.

The other is more of a political lobby umbrella group which represents other groups at a regional level again I am secretary and also treasurer, this group has no social activities other than an annual lunch but organises (sometimes with other groups) lobbying activities with state and federal pollies as well as on-the-street protests - the latest was against the privatisation of a local hospital's services - a fight we won.

They keep me pretty busy but with time for holidays and travel. I enjoy it and will keep doing it until I don't.

I am also a member of a couple of registered clubs but I don't think they are quite what you mean. I only go to them for a drink, a meal and a chat with friends (sadly a diminishing mob)

I'm rubbish with clubs although isn't posting here a sort of club? It's a club you can dip in and out of....you don't have to be there at certain times and you can ignore what doesn't interest.......I can cope with that.

I suppose it is a club really. It's like being in a large room and mingling and chatting to whoever you wish to speak to. The ones you don't sit on their own in a corner or go outside for a smoke if they are really unsociable.

Re: Clubs & groups.

Our local council run fortnightly 'Health Walks' from various parts of the city and I join in with those. You can do an easy 2 miles one or a slightly more arduous 3 mile one depending how fit you are on the day.

I used to love our 'Youth Club' when I was a teenager - we had great jiving contests, and trips out to places such as Malham Tarn or the seaside.

Once - I joined a 'Slimming World' group but, although the advice and the recipes were sound enough, I couldn't cope with all the happy clappy Tabby's lost half a pound - give her a gold star and lets all stand up and cheer nonsense! Not my scene.

Health Walks were first started by Ted Heath's government when the first signs of obesity became obvious.........I'd be surprised if most councils don't still organise these. There is at least one health walk here every week day.

Me too!

I go on my local Walking For Health walk (when it's not raining ) that's about 3-4 miles, then we fall into the cafe for a nice coffee and natter.

But things like Book Clubs don't interest me much, I'd sooner do my own thing.

I think I prefer Classes to Clubs...
