The British, used to have pudding basin helmets in ww2, they rarely fastened the chin strap, this was because if in sentry duty for example, and an enemy soldier attacked from behind , they could pull the helmet back and it would break the neck, the Germans of course had a different design, something similar is used by modern US forces today
Yes, my dad used to complain about his 'tin hat'.
He'd say how "the Americans have helmets that fit, even the Germans had helmets that fit, but we have lids that wobble about on the top of our heads".
