Holden Axed

GMH today announced that the Holden brand will be gone by the end of the year.

About 600 Holden employees will lose their jobs after parent company General Motors announced it would axe the iconic Australian car brand by the end of the year.

GM said the brand was no longer competitive in the current market and would be "retired" from sales, design and engineering across Australia and New Zealand by 2021.

GM International Operations Senior Vice President, Julian Blissett, said the decision would mean the "overwhelming majority" of Holden staff would lose their jobs by the end of June 2020.

Commodore and Astra models were quietly axed late last year but now the brand itself will disappear completely.

A failure by General Motors Holden to keep up with modern car technology leading to declining sales.

Re: Holden Axed

Yeah. Sad days. 72 years. Fond memories of the old Holden surf wagon. My first car. Now I have the Cruz which will be my last. I'm going to turn in my licence in a couple years. My eyesight is failing and I don't think my cardiologist is going to approve me unrestricted for too much longer so I won't bother getting another car. I have two other competent drivers who will take over Vale Holden.

All of the above is no doubt correct P1. But the GM cars in Australia that are badged Holden are no more. The car itself is a historical Australian thing. Probably not telling you anything you don't already know. They have always been General Motors. As far as other GM cars here, I don't know. Apart from luxury European stuff, most cars here are Japanese or Korean with a few of the usual other suspects thrown in. I don't give a $%^@ what it is as long as it goes.
