As for BAIL, the Police are more likely to release someone without bail these days but with their case "still under investigation" to save time and money.
Perhaps they should introduce a US style bail system whereby the accused (or their guarantor) would be charged a sum to make sure they return to court to face charges and if not, that money is not returned?

Baz - it took me along time to realise it but the fact is the judiciary do NOT want the crime levels to come down. Why should they when judges earn £100K plus, have chauffeur driven limos to transport them around and when away from home they never stay in hotels because the government provides secure private accomodation for them.

If the level of crime in the UK came down there would be LESS need for judges and all the associated gravy train.

If the level of crime came down to zero there would be NO NEED for any judiciary at all. So they would all be out of a job.

Never under estimate the ability of humans to put themselves first. If you (or anyone reading this) had the type of job with the pay and perks of a high court judge you would do all in your power to KEEP that job and the best way to do that is to ensure that the person found guilty spends the minimun time in jail and is back out on the streets to commit more crime and thus keep you in work.

Don't ever think that because someone is a high court judge they are doing the job for the benefit of the country and innocent victims of crime, they are NOT

Well they are on a dead cert in this country with the way things are going wrong. Plenty more crime and criminals nowadays that's for sure. Ref. underlined text, last paragraph – now where have I heard something similar to 'high court judges'? Could it be in Westminster by any chance? There must be more than one trough then!

Re: Justice gone soft

Here's a thought:

Instead of sentencing someone to, say, 3 years for, I dunno, fraud for example, if they are young enough (under 40?) why not sentence them to 3 years in the Army?

That's a great idea Percy, I think that some criminals don't warrant being mixed with the harder variety of murderers and rapists.
