'Tis true Bakerman, if you buy a MS/Windows based computer, you feed Bill Gates and Co. If you buy an Apple computer, you feed the other lot. Those are your choices if you buy computers off the shelf. However, if you have a windows-based computer, you can get a computer repair guy to remove Windows and replace it with Linux. I'm waiting for something to go wrong with my desktop before I do just this.

Linux is good. You can do much the same on it as can be done on Windows or a Mac. However, some Windows programs don't have Linux versions and this is what makes Windows my preferred platform.

There are often but not always equivalent programs but they take re-learning. Some may not be so easy to use or as polished as Windows programs.

If unhappy with Windows and don't use any slightly specialist Windows programs, then Linux Mint could be the answer. Still expect regular updates though. Also, it won't run on just any old computer as might be thought. It needs one of reasonable specification to run smoothly.

With some Apple Macs it's possible to feed both Apple and Bill Gates and Co., how's that for generosity! My 27" iMac can support both the Mac OS and M$ / Windows platforms. I choose to keep to the Mac OS after reading of so many problems with M$ and Windows, all that wasted time fixing them would drive me completely round the twist. I can only applaud those of you with M$ / Windows systems, for doing what you do to keep your computers working OK.

..but if it came without an operating system and pre-installed programs, you wouldn't be able to use a computer straight after buying it.

People don't usually do so but you could buy a Computer with a Linux OS on it to start with from Dell (there are other places).

You only get to hear or read about cases where people get trouble. There are more cases with Windows simply because more people use Windows. For every one Windows user with a problem, there may be hundreds or thousands without.

Not many are likely to write about their system if it runs well, so we only get to read of the bad and not the good.

I use OpenOffice in place of MS Office. It's a free download and is compatible with MS Office as far as I can see. I can even save files in MS formats with it.

Yes, I use that on Linux too ..and one of my Windows computers. It is indeed an adequate equivalent to MS Office. What I can't use on Linux is Xara Photo & Graphic Designer, CorelDraw and Photo-Paint and some of my games. I'd have to adapt to Inkscape or Gimp to get something like the same results. I could do that but when Windows works OK, I don't have a real reason to.

Gimp and Inkscape have Windows versions if anyone wants to try them.
