What about Thyme? Plenty of varieties to choose from, shouldn't be too difficult to keep compact and would smell pretty delicious in a sunny spot.

Thanks for your replies.

Mups, yes there is a drainage hole. I do like your idea of strong colours, but also that of some herb plants. I don’t use herbs that often in cooking, but will have a think what I could do with.
