Able Seaman Robert George Duddy

Today is the day I remember, like many others of you, a relative who sadly died in one of the many historical or recent wars. My Uncle Bob died when his ship, the HMS Matabele, was sunk by a German Uboat on January 17th 1942. All but two of the crew of 238 died ,many of them in the freezing waters between Iceland and Murmansk. RIP Uncle Bob.

I was silent for 2 minutes watching the TV today.
Its for my great Uncle Walter who died aged 27 in the
last few months of 1918. His body never found but there
is a name on the memorial somewhere in Belgium for him.
Plus all the rest of the millions who had to die in wars normally
caused by men, religion or boundary arguments.

Re: Able Seaman Robert George Duddy

The Captain of the ship I was in was himself a junior officer during WW2 and took part in a number of convoys to and from Murmansk as well as convoys across the Atlantic. He had three ships sunk underneath him by torpedoes.
