Re: End of an Era, last round £1 Coin Minted

New pound coin designed to combat counterfeiting

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-26632863

A new £1 coin is to be introduced in 2017 amid concerns about the 30-year old coin's vulnerability to counterfeiting, with an estimated 45 million forgeries (1 in 30) in circulation.

The new coin is based on the design of the old threepenny bit, a 12-sided coin in circulation between 1937 and 1971.
How do you spot a fake

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news...fake-1-3259015

There are a few key things to look out for:

1. The date and design on the reverse should match. It is changed each year and you can obtain a list of dates and designs
2. Poor or missing lettering on the edge of the coin
3. The edge of the coin is uneven in depth
4. A coin which has been in circulation for some time but still looks shiny and golden and shows no sign of age
5. The colour does not match genuine coins
6. The Queen's head or reverse design look indistinct
7. Alignment - hold the coin with the Queen's head upright. Turn it over. The design on the other side should also be upright - fakes are often skewed

It is illegal to use one and the Royal Mint says you must hand them in if you think you have been given one.
Hand it in or pass it on - a moral dilemma .....

Will the Euro coin get changed too? it's about the same size and must have the same problems.

Will need new trolley tokens, I have about 4 or 5 of them, I keep one in each coat i'm likely to wear and one in my purse

Re: End of an Era, last round £1 Coin Minted

We're in the middle of it as well. The new 20- 50- and 1000- SEK bank notes went into effect last week and we have until July 2016 to get rid of the old ones, or they'll be useless. We're also getting a 200- SEK bank note, a denomination we've not had since we sacked Scotland (or thereabouts). We're also getting new 100- and 500- SEK bank notes, plus new coins, but those won't be introduced till October 2016, and we'll have until July 2017 to use the old ones. Did I forget something? Perhaps I should start from the beginning again.

Consider yourself damned lucky, Britain!

When the £1 coins were first introduced a friend referred to them as 'beer tokens'

All the supermarkets round here have stopped using the tokens and pound coins for trollies.
