Mine seem to do ok in both sun and shade. Have noted the RHS Gardening website says dappled shade.
The other thing I do with mine is to water them with rain water from my water butt. Rain water being slightly acidic.

The only down side about growing them in containers, they will only grow to the size of the pot, they will never be able to grow like the ones in the ground, I live right next to a field, where it has the most magnificent Rhoddies you have seen....

My point is, my soil must be perfect for them, because of them growing right next to my house, so I may plant one in the ground in my garden....glad you posted this thread....the ones growing in the field are in dappled shade.

Pauline3 Wow they are some awesome looking rhoddies. You’re lucky to have them so close to you.
Wish we had acid soil to grow similar
